Expansive European Food Market Scheduled for Walnut Creek, Spanning Over 24,000 Square Feet
In the heart of Walnut Creek, California, plans to construct a colossal European-inspired food hall have finally received official approval. The prospective 24,000-square-foot culinary haven is destined to enliven downtown, with construction currently underway as of May 2025.
Initially conceived in 2018, the food hall has undergone numerous renditions and schematics, but it was not until recently that the city council granted their approval for the project to move forward. The new food hall will be called The Foundry.
Spanning across two stories, The Foundry will boast a sizeable 24,472 square feet. The project encompasses an outdoor courtyard at the rear, along with two additional buildings to accompany the main structure. Though specifics about the food hall's amenities remain tentative, it's anticipated to resemble Eataly, a three-tier Italian food hall in San Jose, featuring a variety of restaurants, specialty food vendors, and a significant wine section.
The development is slated to occupy most of the city block in the designated area, including an abandoned restaurant building on the corner near the theater. While this approved permit doesn't guarantee the project's fruition, the ambition to create a substantial entertainment and dining space in Walnut Creek has generated great local enthusiasm. By bringing a vibrant food hall experience to the downtown area, residents look forward to savoring pasta and delighting in a glass of wine at The Foundry when it eventually opens its doors.
The future food hall will reside on an empty lot opposite the movie theater on Locust Street, specifically at 1250 Locust St. / 1501 Mount Diablo Blvd. Currently, construction equipment marks the site, but a transformation into the grand food hall is still a considerable distance away. Only time will tell when The Foundry will officially launch its operations and become a significant addition to Walnut Creek's thriving community.
