Established Algarve locations for communal gardening projects
Infralobo Community Gardens Expand in Loulé, Algarve, Emphasizing Sustainability and Food Security
The Infralobo community gardens project in Loulé, Algarve, has recently expanded to promote sustainability, social inclusion, and food security, marking a significant step in the municipality's commitment to these pillars.
This initiative was first introduced by Infralobo in 2016, initially aimed at enhancing the well-being and fostering community among its workers. The initial phase involved five community gardens, each divided into 30 square meter plots with water points for easy cultivation. In 2023, the project grew to include a total of 15 gardens, contributing to the family economy of employees and now open to the broader community, furthering the social impact.
Two additional garden lots have been allocated to the Existir Association recently, providing a learning and social space for students enrolled in the Gardening Course. Participants are responsible for maintaining their plots, promoting autonomy and practical skills. The produce grown is consumed within the Existir Association’s Social Canteen, supporting food security and self-sufficiency.
The gardens operate on underutilized land adjacent to Infralobo’s yards, maximizing the use of available space. The project combines environmental sustainability with social inclusion, directly benefiting both participants and the wider community.
The community gardens initiative supports local ecosystems through organic gardening and reduces food miles. By involving people with diverse backgrounds and abilities, the project fosters a sense of belonging and provides valuable learning opportunities. Increased local production of fresh food supports both institutional and community needs, enhancing resilience against food insecurity.
The ongoing expansion and inclusivity of the Infralobo community gardens project exemplify a successful model of municipal policy focused on well-being, harmony, and practical support for local residents. By integrating sustainability, inclusion, and food security, the project sets a benchmark for community-driven urban agriculture in the Algarve region.
The expansion of the Infralobo community gardens project in Loulé now includes a total of 17 gardens, with two new ones allocated to the Existir Association for their Gardening Course. This extension not only contributes to the family economy of employees but also extends the opportunity to the broader community, promoting social impact.
