Enjoy beer and culture at Munich's Neptun Beer Garden, an alternative to problematic parks
Munich, Germany – The Old Botanical Garden, previously a hub for drug and alcohol-related activities, has undergone significant changes, enhancing the park for local residents. Three weeks after the implementation of stringent measures, including permanent patrols, a ban on alcohol and cannabis, bench removal, and bush trimming, the city can once again boast a safe and welcoming environment around the Neptune Fountain.
Last Friday evening, Chris Lehner, the owner of Park-Café, inaugurated a culture beer garden near the Neptune Fountain and just a few meters from his regular beer garden. This pop-up beer garden, which was operational for several weeks last summer, will remain open until August 23, with numerous events scheduled on the culture stage.
For the comfort of approximately 500 guests, beer benches have been set up, along with several lounge chairs around the pristine Neptune Fountain. A variety of drink stands, such as the Hofbräu Stehausschank (Helles at €3.90) and a vintage camper van offering gin, champagne, and Aperol Spritz, cater to visitors' refreshment needs. Rotating food trucks provide an assortment of grilled food, Spanish empanadas, and delicacies from Latin America.
In celebration of the opening, a gondola, usually seen in Nymphenburg Palace Park, made a special appearance, driven by Maximilian Koch, the gondolier. Although the gondola will not be a permanent fixture, organizers plan to cultivate a romantic atmosphere in front of the Palace of Justice. DJs will play music in the evenings, with Trazon spinning tracks on Saturday until 11 pm, and Linus entertaining Sunday crowds until 10 pm. The drama continues on the stage, with live bands including Tuesday's Jokers Band at 5 pm. Yoga, Qigong courses with music, family programs, and children's singing are also on the agenda. Weather permitting, youngsters may even have the chance to play in the fountain.
