Encouraging Urban greenery expansion
The city of Aschaffenburg has joined the nationwide "Unpaving" project, an initiative aimed at replacing sealed surfaces with greenery to combat climate change. This long-term event, organised by students of the University of Applied Sciences for Social Work in Koblenz, is open to associations, schools, private persons, companies, administrations, and other organisations.
As part of the project, a small square at the corner of Buchenweg/Ulmenweg in Nilkheim, Aschaffenburg, has been redesigned. Approximately 315 square meters were sealed in the redesign, which now features a lawn, three trees, and new benches. The fountain in the square was retained to maintain its charm.
All Aschaffenburg citizens are invited to actively participate in this "Unpaving" initiative. Participants can enter their unpaved areas into a specially developed online portal by October 31, 2025. The competition management will verify entries and collect and evaluate them for each municipality.
The competition is a monthly affair during the competition season, with three winning municipalities being honoured in November 2025 in three categories: large city, medium-sized city, and small town. Leipzig has the chance to win the first prize in the category "Large City".
The "Unpaving" initiative supports cities and citizens in bringing more space for nature into urban life, aiming to improve the urban climate and enhance the quality of life for city residents. Before-and-after photos are required for entry. The competition management will evaluate the entries based on the extent of the unpaved area, the greenery added, and the overall impact on the urban environment. The project that best demonstrates a successful transformation will be crowned "Star of the Month" monthly.
