Easy-to-make DIY Small Notes of Appreciation

Here's a ballsy, unapologetic take on DIY adorable note cards:

Alright, y'all! Today I'm going to show you how to create a whole freakin' pile of cute little as f**k note cards. Whether you need 'em for thank yous, birthday wishes, or just have an itch to fill your life with small, personalized pieces of art, this guide is for you. Don't worry; I ain't asking ye to be Picasso, just follow along, and you'll be golden!

These cards are a breeze to make, can be customized with your favorite colors, and are insanely versatile. Guess what I'm making right now? A stack of these beauties for the fuckin' stellar instructors at Workshop Week (you'll hear more about 'em later!) but you can use 'em for a fuckton of things.

Materials

  • Paint (I'm partial to Ecoline liquid watercolors, but use whatever you got)
  • Watercolor paper (or sturdy cardstock)
  • Brushes (a big one for the backdrop, a smaller one for details)
  • Painter's tape (this shit is useful for keeping things clean)
  • A cutter or scissors
  • Water
  • Optional: A corner rounder punch (for that extra posh look!)

Let's Fuckin' Do This!

When I say this tutorial is easy, I mean damn easy. This technique is so much fun, and it's something that anyone—and I mean ANYONE—can do. You don't need any goddamn experience!

You can use any paint or even markers for this card design. I'm using Ecoline Liquid Watercolors because they're my sh*t, but you can use whatever paints or markers you have on hand.

Step #1: Backdrop Bonanza

Tape your paper down and slap on a solid, flat, single color background with your chosen paint—use plenty of water if you're using watercolors! Let it dry completely. I usually do a couple of different colors at once.

Step #2: Doodle Time

Once everything's dry, take your smaller brush and the same color paint (a little less watered down so it's darker) and start randomly making simple marks, designs, or shapes all over the background. Don't overthink it; just have a good fucking time! These random patterns look amazing when the cards are cut.

Step #3: Chop 'Er Up

After the doodles are dry, it's time to cut your painted sheets into smaller card sizes. I usually cut mine into eighths, making eight cards per sheet.

Optional Step: Finishing Touch

If you have a corner rounder, punch the corners of your cards. It just looks fantastic!

And That's a Wrap!

There you go! You'll have a stunning stack of unique, handmade note cards ready for any situation.
