Sunday Car Washing: A Hurdle in Rhineland-Palatinate, Sailing Smooth in Neighboring Regions

Chances are slim for a quick Sunday spruce-up for your motor in Rhineland-Palatinate. But take a short drive to Hesse, and voila! You can scrub, polish, and give your baby the TLC it deserves. The stark difference between the two neighboring federal states, as critics see it, calls for a change in the existing laws.

The Fuel Station Interest Association stands firm that the Sunday car wash ban is a relic of the past. The group argues that there's already work happening at fuel stations on Sundays, and many automated car washes operate without staff. Moreover, they point out, numerous European countries allow the freedom to pick a car wash day without restrictions.

For small business owners in Rhineland-Palatinate, Baden-Württemberg, the Saarland, and other federal states, the Sunday car wash ban leads to an estimated annual loss of profit ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 euros, the association warns.

There's also an environmental angle to consider: Automated car washes are water-efficient and eco-friendly, compared to homemade car washes which can burden local sewer systems or, worse, harm the environment directly.

A conversation with the Rhineland-Palatinate Minister-President, Alexander Schweitzer (SPD), on this matter is yet to happen. The Association has requested a meeting, but the Minister has either ignored the request or declined to schedule one.

The regulations on where and when car washing is allowed is largely dependent on local laws. Car washing is prohibited in gardens or unpaved areas, and fines may be imposed according to the Water Resources Act.

If you're thinking about using chemical substances in your wash water, remember that these can potentially damage groundwater.

The German Federal Environment Agency (BfN) advises using approved self-service car washes and professional car washing facilities. They suggest opting for shorter programs and stress that car washes are more water-efficient than a garden hose, as they recycle water within an internal system.

The Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of the Interior has clarified that operating car washes and car wash centers on Sundays and public holidays is prohibited, based on the state law concerning the protection of Sundays and public holidays.

Sunday, some argue, is meant to be a day of rest—a day for family, friends, and relaxation, free from workday activities with a profit motive. Union leaders view Sunday as a day of rest, relaxation, and volunteering, making it rightfully legally protected.

Some, like Koblenz state parliamentarian Stephan Wefelscheid of the Free Democrats, think the ban on Sunday car washing is outdated. Most car washes are situated away from residential areas and are already set up for self-service. Wefelscheid poses the question: "How can a self-service car wash in an industrial area disturb the peace?"

In a modern society where both partners often work long hours, traditional Sunday restrictions may seem antiquated, reflecting a time before secularization. Wefelscheid calls for a change of heart from the state government and an evaluation of the ban, as does the Tankstellen-Interessenverband.

  1. The Fuel Station Interest Association insists that the prohibition of Sunday car washing in Rhineland-Palatinate is a relic of the past, as many automated car washes operate without staff and several European countries allow car wash days without restrictions.
  2. Vocational training in car-maintenance could be part of Sunday activities in Rhineland-Palatinate, as it could generate income for small businesses while educating individuals in a home-and-garden setting, potentially becoming a vocational training space.
  3. Considering the environmental impact, promoting eco-friendly car wash practices like using approved self-service car washes and professional car washing facilities on Sundays could help reduce the excessive use of water and the release of pollutants.
  4. To foster a better lifestyle and encourage community engagement, the Rhineland-Palatinate Association could establish a car-maintenance and vocational training association on Sundays, providing an alternative to garden activities and offering opportunities for volunteering and skill development.
  5. By adjusting the Sunday car wash regulations to allow eco-friendly and self-service car washes, Rhineland-Palatinate can modernize its approach, aligning with the rhineland's reputation for sustainability and embracing a more balanced lifestyle.
