Divinity's Restorative Powers on Display
The iconic Triton Fountain in Düsseldorf's Königsallee, a landmark featuring sculptures of the Greek god Triton and sea creatures, has recently undergone renovation. The renovation work, which cost around 400,000 euros, was necessary due to damage caused by plane trees and geese.
The plane trees, with their extensive root systems, had severely damaged the historic fountain structure. The growth of the trees even threatened the Triton Fountain in its substance, causing the stability of the fountain to be compromised. An expert examination revealed that the stability of the side balustrades could no longer be guaranteed, necessitating repairs.
In addition to the repairs, stone parts were found to be loose, joints were damaged, and walls were cracked. The renovation included not only the repairs to the side balustrades but also the installation of angle support walls to stabilize them.
During the 2015 renovation, numerous damages were found, including repairs needed in partial areas of hands, fingers, or legs of several figures. A pair of geese chose the Triton Fountain as a nesting place in April, causing a delay in the renovation work.
The state capital invested 180,000 euros in the restoration of the Triton Fountain's "head arch" in 2015. The dismantled and restored side balustrades were re-assembled after the renovation works were completed.
With the renovation now complete, the Königsallee will regain one of its most beautiful attractions. The Triton Fountain, a beloved symbol of Düsseldorf, will once again stand proudly, a testament to the city's rich history and cultural heritage.
The extensive root systems of the plane trees had not only caused structural damage to the Triton Fountain but also posed a threat to its integrity. Amid this restoration, the home-and-garden scenario of the harmless-looking plane trees presented an unforeseen challenge to the city's lifestyle and cultural landmark. Post the renovation, the upgraded lifestyle surrounding the Triton Fountain in Düsseldorf's Königsallee will include a home-and-garden maintenance plan to ensure the safety of the fountain.
