Diving from the Rhine Tower to the air-raid shelter, a tour of Dormagen's historical landmarks

On Sunday, September 14, 2022, the city of Dormagen will open its doors to history enthusiasts as part of the nationwide "Day of Open Monuments" initiative. This event, organised by the "German Foundation for Monument Protection", promises a day filled with discovery and learning.

The day's programme extends from the city centre to various locations outside of Dormagen, with over 25 individual actions and 16 historical sites to explore. Highlights include a guided tour through the Zonser Heath about the rediscovery of the imperial-Bavarian military camp of 1642, and the reopening of the iconic Rheinturm in Zons, a landmark of Dormagen.

The Rheinturm, vacant for more than 20 years, will welcome visitors from 10 a.m. onwards. For those interested, guided tours can be booked online at www.tinyurl.com/tourrheinturm. The opening event will take place at the Rheinturm (Rheinstraße 1) in Zons.

Other sites open during the event include the Roman UNESCO World Heritage site, Knechtsteden monastery, the memorial cemetery in Dormagen-Mitte, the Jewish cemetery in the Zonser Heath, the Bunker Memorial Site in the Raphaelshaus, the historic Friedestrom castle, the Kreismuseum, Rheintorkapelle, windmill, air raid shelter at the Feldtor, and several other sites.

In addition to these, Gerd Bock, the new honorary monument care officer, will offer an advisory service from 12 to 2 p.m. on September 14 under the chestnut tree on the Mühlenstraße in the Zonser old town.

This year's event theme is "Worthwhile: Priceless or Irreplaceable?" and promises to be a day of reflection and appreciation for Dormagen's rich history.

More information about the Day of Open Monuments can be found online at www.ourwebsite/monumentday. The Dormagen city administration is also participating in the event, making it a day not to be missed for anyone interested in history and culture. Participation in all events is free, so come and join us in celebrating Dormagen's heritage!
