Dapper in Formal Attire
Ryan Oxton, a well-known homebrewing expert and host of the popular YouTube channel "Brew Dudes," has been assisting hundreds of brewers in finding the perfect setup for their brewing space. With the launch of his Conical fermenter line in 2017, Oxton has been sharing his expertise on the essential accessories that can help enhance the efficiency and ease of using conical fermenters.
One of the key accessories that Oxton recommends is the Ball Valve and Butterworth Fittings, which provide an easy and sanitary method for draining trub and yeast from the conical fermenter. Another useful addition is the Sample Valve or Sampling Port, allowing brewers to take samples during fermentation without opening the fermenter.
For precise temperature control in the brewing process, Oxton suggests using the TC100 Bundle. To monitor fermentation temperature closely, he recommends a Temperature Probe Port, allowing brewers to insert a probe directly inside the fermenter. For safe CO2 release during fermentation, especially if doing pressurized fermentation, Oxton recommends a Pressure Relief Valve or Blow-off Tube.
To elevate the fermenter for easy access to valves and draining, Oxton suggests using a Conical Stand or Adjustable Legs. For minimizing oxygen exposure when racking wort or beer out, he recommends using CO2 Purged Transfer Lines. To help maintain cleanliness and sanitation, Oxton advises using Cleaning and Sanitizing Accessories, such as spray balls designed for inside-of-fermenter cleaning.
In addition to these accessories, Oxton often brews 5-gallon batches using a Glycol Chiller for cold crashing beer and stabilizing temperatures during Wisconsin summers. He uses the Carb Stone Bundle (with All-In-One PRV) to control pressure and keep oxygen out of the fermenter.
To move from his wort chiller into the fermenter from the bottom dump port, Oxton uses the 2" TC QC and the Female Quick Connect Barb. He adds a 2" Sight Glass to the bottom dump port to monitor and control the release of yeast, trub, and hops. To make the fermenter both height and stable, he uses shorty leg extensions and the extended bracing shelf.
Oxton also uses the racking arm to squeeze out the last few beers from the fermenter, and the Closed Pressure Transfer Kit in conjunction with the gas manifold bundle to keep oxygen out of the finished beer when kegging. Finally, he uses a 2" cap on the back of the sight glass for easy removal, cleaning, and reattachment.
While Oxton's exact recommendations may vary depending on the specific fermenter model, he often emphasizes sanitary practices, ease of use, and leveraging fermenter features to simplify brewing. For the most precise list and detailed explanations, it's recommended to check out Ryan's videos where he reviews and sets up conical fermenters, like those from Blichmann or FastFerment.
Ryan Oxton's favorite part is helping homebrewers turn their passion into a rewarding profession. He is involved in the buyer's journey from start to finish, and sometimes beyond, ensuring that brewers have the tools they need to create great-tasting beer.
The Ball Valve and Butterworth Fittings, found in Ryan Oxton's recommended accessories, offer a convenient and hygienic method for emptying trub and yeast from conical fermenters. Additionally, the TC100 Bundle and Temperature Probe Port combination provide brewers with precise temperature control during the brewing process.
