Cozmo and Pearson Lloyd challenge you to discover the world's most comfortable sofa
The 'Hug' sofa, a unique piece of furniture that promises comfort and style, is set to make its debut at the 'Comfort Lab by Pearson Lloyd' exhibition during London Design Festival 2025. The event will take place at WAX, 4 Garden Walk, London EC2A 3EQ, from 13th to 21st September.
The collaboration between Cozmo founder Jacob Peres and designers Luke Pearson and Tom Lloyd of Pearson Lloyd resulted in this innovative sofa design. Known for their 28-year career in designing various products, from office chairs to airline seats and hearing aids, Pearson Lloyd were tasked by Cozmo to create a high-back sofa named 'Hug'.
The design process for the 'Hug' sofa was rigorous and tactile, starting on the workshop floor with a Frankenstein-like wooden structure. Unlike traditional upholstery, the fabric treatment for 'Hug' is handled in a looser and freer way, making it easier for customers to remove jackets for cleaning or replacement.
The exaggerated lumbar support of the 'Hug' sofa is integrated within its back and shaped the entire design direction, according to Peres. The high back of the sofa is much higher than other contemporary upholstery, providing an embrace-like feel by cradling the back, neck, and head.
The frame of the 'Hug' sofa is made of webbed steel packed with varying densities of foam, memory foam, and a feather quilt, ensuring maximum comfort. The design reflects the comfort it aims to establish, similar to creating a tailored coat. Comfort was made visible in the design of the 'Hug' sofa, with its proportions, posture, and textile wrinkles all communicating comfort before sitting.
Visitors to 'Comfort Lab' will have the opportunity to witness the designers' research, design, and development process, including early scale models and full-size prototypes. The exhibition promises to give a behind-the-scenes look at the amount of work and research that goes into making a sofa and the opportunity to sample the results for themselves.
Cozmo has also created a film that captures the process of designing and creating the 'Hug' sofa. The launch of 'Hug' and the 'Comfort Lab' exhibition is a testament to the collaboration between Pearson Lloyd and Cozmo, demonstrating how comfort and design inform each other in creating a unique and comfortable piece of furniture.
