Enhanced Immersion
This year's Grand City Chimes mix-up, scheduled for 4:30 to 5:00 PM, is created by the innovative minds of the Ensemble Modern, a collective of international soloists based in Frankfurt. The fresh composition aims to immerse you deeper in the resonance festival.
The Ensemble Modern's creation will be an annual tradition for Pentecost, titled "supra urbem" ("above the city"). The traditional version, dating back to Mainzer bell expert Paul Smets’ 1954 arrangement, will still be playing on Christmas Eve, the Saturday before Easter, and other select dates.
As the bells start to sound individually from the highest pitches, they'll intertwine into a harmonious overall melody around 15 minutes later. You can catch a glimpse of the city's history, as the decision to perform chime events during Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost dates back to 1856. The title "Grand City Chimes" was added later.
