The New York State Fair is known for its iconic annual event, the butter sculpture, which this year is titled "Dairy For Good: Nourish. Grow. Thrive." Weighing a massive 800 pounds, the sculpture is large enough to cover 76,800 pancakes with butter.

This year's sculpture was created by the veteran artists Jim Victor and Marie Pelton, who have been responsible for crafting these masterpieces since 2003. The sculpture was unveiled at the fair's opening, serving as a tribute to the hardworking dairy farmers of New York State and drawing thousands of visitors.

The sculpture was inspired by the classic novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" written by L. Frank Baum, a native of Chittenango, New York. The cow in the sculpture is depicted in a hot air balloon, symbolizing Dorothy’s ruby slippers with red hooves. The phrase "Dairy defies gravity" is inscribed on the sculpture, reflecting the novel's themes.

After the fair concludes, every golden pound of the butter sculpture heads back west to be recycled into renewable energy at Noblehurst Farms in Pavilion. This sustainable practice highlights the fair's commitment to environmental responsibility.

The New York State Fair's Opening Day forecast is yet to be determined, but the fair opens at 9 a.m. on Wednesday and runs through Labor Day, Sept. 1. Visitors can catch a glimpse of the butter sculpture live on the fair's Facebook page.

State Commissioner of Agriculture and Markets Richard Ball congratulated the sculptors after the unveiling, acknowledging the sculpture's significance in representing New York's agricultural heritage and dairy farming culture. The 2025 butter sculpture is the latest in a long line of butter sculptures at the New York State Fair, dating back to 1969.
