Bremen Infrastructure Crisis: Disruptions Impact 8,130 Port Workers
Infrastructure issues are causing significant disruptions in the Bremen and Bremerhaven region. A backlog of twelve transports is waiting in Bremen for a new permit to proceed to Bremerhaven. Meanwhile, the closure of the A27 and suspension of the ferry service between Bremerhaven and Nordenham are inconveniencing BLG employees and affecting the region's 8,130 port workers.
The closure of the A27, due to a dilapidated culvert, is forcing heavy transport to seek new permits for detours, putting customers in the high- & heavy sector at a disadvantage. The suspension of the ferry service between Bremerhaven and Nordenham is also causing inconveniences for BLG employees, who are facing longer routes.
The closure of the Hunte bridge in Elsfleth is impacting ports in Elsfleth, Nordenham, and Brake, with the railway bridge closed to shipping indefinitely. Despite these challenges, BLG Logistics is offering free capacities in the Neustädter Hafen, which boasts a marshalling yard and 15 kilometers of railway tracks, ensuring the port's connectivity. Frank Dreeke, CEO of BLG Logistics, stresses the importance of infrastructure investments for the country's future.
The German federal government has acknowledged these infrastructure issues, announcing investments in infrastructure and climate neutrality over the next twelve years, including a special fund of over 500 billion euros. As the A27 remains fully closed between Bremen and Bremerhaven, authorities are working to clear the backlog and minimize disruptions to the region's vital port industry.
