BOMESI Receives $750,000 Grant to Expand Ad Network and Digitalize Bomisi Scale

BOMESI, an evidence-based model for promoting educational opportunities and social integration, has received a $750,000 grant from Press Forward. This funding will support the expansion of BOMESI's ad network and accelerator work, including the development of the Bomisi Scale into a digital software tool.

The Bomisi Scale is an IP-backed, weighted revenue model that enables groups of publishers to win deals together and redistributes proceeds to smaller sites. BOMESI, which stands for Bildungsorientierter Mess- und Interventionsindex Evidence-based and Sustainable Integration, uses the Bomisi Scale as a central tool to assess the needs and potential of learners, particularly those from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. The software tool aims to digitize data collection, analysis, and reporting, benefiting various stakeholders in the education sector, including schools, social service providers, and administrative bodies. BOMESI's co-founders, Rhonesha Byng and DéVon Christopher Johnson, started the initiative to support Black and diverse-owned media. The organization began with a database of 50 Black-owned media platforms and has since grown to over 300. The BOMESI Accelerator helps Black and diverse publishers become 'business-ready' for larger brand deals and ad partnerships. BOMESI operates on three pillars: ecosystem, education, and economic empowerment. All cohorts of the BOMESI Accelerator have remained operational after graduation, and the organization is preparing for its fifth cohort and planning future Summits. The annual Summit serves as a community anchor for publishers and partners. BOMESI aims to productize the Bomisi Scale into a software tool for other newsrooms and brands, further expanding its impact on the media landscape.

With the $750,000 grant from Press Forward, BOMESI is poised to expand its ad network and accelerator work, including the development of the Bomisi Scale into a digital software tool. This will not only benefit BOMESI's existing network of over 300 Black and diverse-owned media platforms but also other newsrooms and brands looking to leverage the Bomisi Scale's unique revenue model. The organization's commitment to supporting Black and diverse-owned media, as well as its focus on education, ecosystem, and economic empowerment, positions it well to continue making a significant impact in the media industry.
