Invite from Raven to Sparrow: Berlin Residents Encouraged to Take Part in Bird Counting Event - Berlin residents urge bird census

Berlin, a city bustling with life, is home to an array of avian creatures. From the swift and majestic Peregrine falcon to the charming blue-and-orange kingfisher, the city teems with feathered friends. The Nature Conservation Union Germany (NABU) and the Bavarian Nature Conservation Association LBV are on a mission to find out more, and they're inviting you to join them! From May 9 to 11, take part in the "Hour of Garden Birds" event and count the city's winged inhabitants.

If you're keen on counting birds in Berlin's city center, NABU Berlin has a tip for you. Check out the chaffinch, a bird with a red face and yellow wing stripes, often referred to as the brambling. In the outskirts, don't miss the redstart with its vibrant, bobbing red tail and melodious song. Common urban birds like sparrows and pigeons should also be accounted for.

Last year, an impressive 36,000 birds were tallied in Berlin!

Here's how you can participate: Choose a quiet spot in your garden, park, or even a window, watch the birds for an hour, and jot down the highest number of each species you spot. Submit your results via the internet, app, or post. The nature conservation associations aim to gather insights into current bird population trends that can complement official statistics. Last year, 1,980 Berliners participated, counting 36,000 birds!

Berlin's NABU groups are hosting excursions during the counting weekend. In Lichtenberg district, join the count on May 11 at 9:00 AM in Wartenberger field. For families with children, there's a special counting session on May 10 at 2:00 PM in Rummelsburger Bucht.

Precise figures or species counts for Berlin can be found by contacting local birding organizations or conservation groups that participated in the event. Happy birdwatching!
