Airline Company Virgin Australia Leads Australian Airlines, Allowing Pets on Flights for Travel
Virgin Australia Becomes Australia's First Pet-Friendly Airline
Virgin Australia, a major Australian airline, is set to make history as it becomes the country's first pet-friendly airline. On October 16, 2025, the airline will launch its new "Pets in Cabin" service, offering a unique travel experience for pet owners and their furry companions.
The inaugural flight will depart from Melbourne Airport (MEL) and head to the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast, marking a significant milestone in Australian aviation. This trial service will accommodate up to four small dogs and cats per flight, with each pet required to be transported in an approved soft-sided carrier measuring no more than 44 x 26 x 28 cm.
To ensure the comfort and safety of all passengers, Virgin Australia has implemented a series of measures addressing allergy and hygiene considerations. The aircraft is equipped with advanced HEPA filtration systems, capturing over 99% of airborne particles, including pet dander. The cabin air is refreshed 20-30 times each hour to lower the chance of airborne allergens spreading.
For the benefit of both pet owners and other passengers, "buffer zones" have been created. These zones consist of two rows behind and two rows in front of the allocated pet rows, minimizing allergen exposure. Passengers with pets will be given window seats in specific rows to further ensure a comfortable and enjoyable flight for everyone involved.
To travel with their pets, owners must ensure their pets are up-to-date with vaccinations. Certain health conditions and breeds may require a veterinary-issued certificate. It's important to note that pets cannot be taken out at any time during the flight.
Virgin Australia's move into the pet-friendly travel market follows the lead of major carriers in North America and Europe, such as United Airlines, Air France, and Air Canada, which already offer pets to travel onboard on domestic routes. This new service by Virgin Australia is a testament to the growing demand for pet-friendly travel options and the airline's commitment to providing exceptional customer experiences.
