In the heart of Solingen, a city known for its rich history and vibrant community, a new hub of support and solidarity has emerged. The Helping Umbrellas, initially a small clothing room called "Regenbogen" in Ohligs, has grown into a thriving community centre on Linkgasse.

Since its inception in 2022, The Helping Umbrellas has been committed to providing aid and support to those in need. Agnieszka Moranska-Roeder, a Polish expat who moved to Germany around 20 years ago and understands the challenges of adapting to a foreign city, serves as the chairwoman. Her personal experience fuels her dedication to helping others navigate similar hurdles.

The Helping Umbrellas has forged a partnership with Colibri Education since spring 2025, working together to offer educational and further education opportunities to refugees. This collaboration extends beyond just academic support, providing a comprehensive approach to integration.

Inside the clubrooms, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingles with soft chatter and hearty laughter. The space is warm and inviting, offering fixed consultation times, an open language café, encounter offers, a flexible childcare service, and psychological counseling. The Helping Umbrellas has also expanded its offerings to include a senior event and the building of an international library.

The Helping Umbrellas has shown its commitment to helping those affected by crises, both locally and internationally. In response to the heavy flooding that hit parts of Poland in the same year, aid was sent within a few days. The Russian invasion of Ukraine triggered a renewed commitment, as many refugees needed support. The Helping Umbrellas has since sent numerous aid transports to Ukraine, including clothing, hygiene articles, durable food, toys, and handwritten letters.

Despite the challenges posed by rising transport costs, bureaucratic hurdles, and dwindling donations, the Helping Umbrellas continues to offer help that goes beyond just a gesture. Agnieszka Moranska-Roeder, the driving force behind the organisation, welcomes visitors personally. Her dedication has not gone unnoticed, with her nomination for the "Solingen HeimatHerz 2025" engagement award.

The Helping Umbrellas is more than just a community centre; it's a beacon of hope for those seeking support and a sense of belonging. It stands as a testament to the power of community and the human spirit, proving that with dedication and compassion, we can make a difference in the lives of others.

In the heart of the expanded Helping Umbrellas, one can find not only a thriving community centre but also a home-and-garden section. Agnieszka Moranska-Roeder, the dedicated chairwoman, has envisioned this area as a place for the community to interact, foster relationships, and improve their lifestyle. The home-and-garden section offers workshops on topics such as gardening, sustainable living, and cooking, aiming to provide a holistic approach to the well-being of the community members.
