Acclaim for outdoor safety initiatives is given to MSC
Mountain Safety Council Wins Bronze at NZ Marketing Awards
The Mountain Safety Council (MSC) has claimed a well-deserved victory, winning a bronze award at the TVNZ NZ Marketing Awards held in Auckland. The MSC was recognised in the Not-for-Profit category, a testament to their dedication to promoting safety in outdoor recreation activities across New Zealand.
The success story began with the redesign of the New Zealand Avalanche Advisory (NZAA) website. The aim was to simplify the presentation of complex topics and make it user-friendly for the diverse audience that the MSC serves. To ensure the website met the needs of its users, the MSC collaborated with their digital product partner, Somar Digital.
The hard work and collaboration paid off, as the NZAA website was also named a finalist for the Designers Institute of New Zealand Best Design Awards. The new website, launched within ten days with support from partners like Water Safety NZ and Somar Digital, is an easy-to-use hub that caters to people's specific situations.
The MSC's approach to improving safety is people-centric, with all efforts driven by clear evidence and effective engagement. The input of the alpine community and the technical expertise of the MSC's forecasting team were essential in the redesign of the NZAA website.
The MSC's commitment to safety extends beyond the slopes. During the 2020 duck shooting season, they launched the safety campaign "Let Old Habits Die, Not Your Mates". This campaign, inspired by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) in Victoria, Australia, encouraged duck shooters to re-think their firearms behaviour.
The campaign proved to be a resounding success. The 2020 duck shooting season ended without a person being shot by themselves or another hunter for the first time since 2004. The MSC's Operations Manager expressed delight at being recognised for their work to improve outdoor safety.
In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the MSC created a new website, Covid-19 Outdoors, to communicate acceptable outdoor recreation practices. The website was also named a finalist at the Designers Institute of New Zealand Best Design Awards.
The MSC considers themselves a small team that makes a significant difference. They take pride in the high-quality work they consistently produce, and the awards serve as a way for them to receive external validation and compare themselves across sectors. The MSC's team is proud to continue their mission of promoting safety in New Zealand's great outdoors.
